American FMA 18 Title: "Marcoh's Notes"
Japanese Airdate: February 07, 2004
American Airdate: March 12, 2005
Important Characters: Lieutenant Maria Ross, Sergeant Denny Brosh, Sciezka, Scar
Important Locations: Central City
Synopsis: Ed and Al visit Central again to for research material regarding the Philosopher's Stone that Dr. Marcoh's note pointed out to Ed. However, the library in Central has burnt down which held the material the Elric brothers required to look up the Stone. The prime suspect that was pointed out by eyewitnesses was none other than Scar..
Name Change
Denny Brosh's last name is dubbed as "Bloch." Unless the DVD confirms that the name is officially "Bloch," this'll remain as a change considering even the official Japanese site lists him off as "Brosh."
Update: The DVD's Japanese subtitle track confirms that it is indeed spelled Brosh and not Bloch.
Stupid Dialogue
Ed tells Denny and Maria that he'll transmute all the ashes back together into their book forms. A gust of wind picks up and blows the ashes away. In the original, Denny asks if he can still transmute them without the ashes.
In the dub, Denny adds a goofy comment, asking if the wind was his doing and how impressive it was. Al also pointed out in the original that it wouldn't have worked anyways.
Cut and Change
Before the commercial break, the scene focusing on Sceizka is somewhat shortened by a second. And the FMA title appears in the wrong spot..again. This time in the upper left corner, rather than the lower right.
Cut
The fight between Scar and Gluttony was shortened due to a big case of blood spray. Originally, Scar used his arm to try and blow apart Gluttony's brains. He somewhat succeeded, but the ball of flesh was unaffected by it. The cut lasted for about 2 or 3 seconds. You could probably notice the skip in the background music. Here are pictures of the cut scenes.
Final Thoughts
All in all, the episode was handled pretty fairly decently. I wasn't too keen on Vic's voice for Ed's reaction towards the reasoning for why people avoided the research on the Philosopher's Stone. He sounded too soft and made Ed's voice seem like he was hitting puberty or something. Everyone else's voices were great, especially Sheska's.
